We are checking video footage and photographs circulated this morning that depict the aftermath of a reported vehicle-borne explosive blast that authorities in Russia state killed a high-ranking military officer in Moscow. Russian authorities stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that exploded and that he succumbed to his wounds. A probe is currently ongoing. The initial step to verify the location of where the images were from was based on social media reports indicating the blast happened on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern part of the capital city of Russia. Our analysis employed street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the Russian search engine Yandex to corroborate the unique yellow colour of a nearby apartment building seen in the footage. Locating additional buildings, lamp-posts and the street layout confirmed the exact location the pictures were captured. We also checked that the videos were new and that the images had not undergone digital alteration.
