Information Available Regarding the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Terrorist Incident

A minimum of 16 people lost their lives and more than 40 were wounded when assailants fired on a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local police have called a terrorist attack.

According to the most recent information, authorities have stated the death toll stands at 16, including one of the suspected gunmen. Furthermore, 42 people with injuries were transported to the hospital.

The deceased are yet to be publicly named, but police believe their ages range between 10 and 87 years old.

Listed are the individuals who have been identified at this time.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Described as a father-of-five, he served as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and acquaintances spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative remarked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, as stated by his wife.

She told the events leading up to the attack, explaining they had been standing together when the shooting started. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she said.

The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

In a statement, a senior official said that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the message read.

One Child

A child who was taken to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was a fatality during the attack, according to reports referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospital, many are still receiving treatment, with several in serious condition. Those hurt include two police officers who attended the scene.

A wounded man is a bystander who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the gunmen. Called a local hero, he received bullet wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Reports indicate he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he described the incident as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the response of those who came to assist. He stated he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the attack. He said he listened to “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
